Guru or Elance?

What is your preference?

As a freelance writer I am always on the prowl for paying gigs. I did my time with the low paying jobs, and I need to concentrate more on jobs that will be worth my time and effort. I regularly check the free services, but I have heard that a lot of jobs get posted on the membership sites. I guess they figure if you are willing to pay for the membership you are amore serious writer. I’ve also heard that there aren’t as many scam postings on these sites. It’s no Craig’sList.

I have read positives about both services over the past several months, but lately there has been a little negative buzz regarding Elance. It seems that they have been concentrating a great deal on their own income. It sounds like many of the services that will help you in your job search cost extra.

I’ve been participating as a free member of Guru, and there have been a few interesting posts, but so far it hasn’t lead to anything. Guru does let you search for jobs, even though you are not eligible to bid on them unless you are a paying member, and there are quite a few jobs that look promising. I was hoping to hear what your opinion is before I bite the bullet and plunk down my money.

  1. I checked them both out, but I’m not impressed with either of them. I think I can do better on my own. I did purchase Writers Market from Amazon, and I’m thinking of purchasing a membership at their website. I believe it will be a great way to get my article in a magazine. Hopefully I’ll receive regular work that way. One of my friends writes has a regular gig with Nickelodeon.

  2. The more I look into it, the more I’m convinced that my money will be better spent elsewhere. I’ve been reading a lot of things on other blogs that many of the jobs posted on elance and guru are also posted on many of the free services.

  3. I noticed that also.

My first week as freelance writer I signed up for ifreelance. What a bad mistake. The pay that many clients are asking for quality work is insulting, lesson learned.
