Gutting It Out

Sometimes life seems to get in the way. Most bloggers aren’t fortunate enough to be able to do this for a living. For most of us, it is something we do after spending a full day making a living. The difficulty is, sometimes there aren’t enough hours in the day to fit it all in.

A lot of jobs have seasons that are more busy than others. For instance, anyone working in the accounting industry is rapidly charging full speed ahead into tax preparation season. For retailers it was last month dealing with Christmas shoppers. Even if your job doesn’t have a busy season, you still have days that take the energy out of you. So, after a physically or mentally draining day, how do you muster up what it takes to write?

Sometimes you just have to buckle down and do it.

First, don’t worry about the finished product, just write. If every thing you write is being edited by your mind, nothing will ever be good enough. When you’re tired, your internal editor seems to get stronger. Overcome that by not writing for your blog, just write. There will be plenty of chances to pull usable pieces out later. For now, open up your word processor and start writing. If you don’t know what to write, write about that. Write about how hard it is to come up with something to say.

Natalie Goldberg in her book Writing Down the Bones suggests using timed exercises. Set a time limit, and keep writing until you reach your limit. If you are new to doing something like that, set a shorter time limit. Don’t worry about what your writing, just write. Don’t stop to think about what to say next, or to go back and correct something you’ve already written; write until your time is up. It’s amazing how often your mind will lead you into something that is very useful.

Once you’ve finished your writing exercise you can go back into what you have written and pull out the parts that can be developed into a good post.

Writing is not always easy. In fact, sometimes it can be hard work, but if you are willing to make yourself sit down and write on a regular basis, over time it does get easier. Get in the habit of writing whether you feel like it or not. Not only will the words come more readily, but you’ll see the quality of your writing improve as well.
